“Are the Phillies playing?”
This schedule does its job simply and clearly. In years past, I’ve relied on my Acme grocery store schedule to plan my dates with the Fightins’, but navigating a small schedule riddled with ads for local auto dealerships and real estate agents can be a bit of a bummer for the eyes. Instead, “The Official (Not Actually Official) Philadelphia Phillies 2024 Back-Half Schedule” is just about as straightforward as it gets.
It was a relaxing and enjoyable process to cut out 29 of my favorite player’s faces. Anytime it makes sense to add a halftone in my work, I’m probably gonna do it. I think referencing classic print techniques helps tap into the universal print language and adds important texture and character to the page. And most of us can agree that an image formed from a bunch of little dots is a little bit cooler than your average grayscale image.
My design was inspired by retro baseball ephemera. I went for a vintage and restrained color palette. Red and blue felt like the obvious choice for contrasting colors that would work effectively on a schedule while keeping on brand with the Phillies and America lol. I kept the colors limited by using a one-tone black for the halftone portraits as well as the calendar structure and most of the typography. I went all in on the vintage look by setting the background to a light yellow, aged paper color that matched my recently acquired antique 1962 store Phillies scorecard.
This was a great project to create and share with friends, family, and fellow Phillies fans. It always feels good to combine sports design. This was a great exercise in designing something I wanted for myself. I love it when I need something and then I’m like “Oh yeah I could just make it exactly how I want it!”
Last year, I made a more illustrative Eagles schedule that was meant to be a bit more energetic and bold. I wanted this schedule to hit you like a Brian Dawkins tackle. I focused on creating unique type solutions and crude yet exciting logo replications that were based on a loose and almost chaotic grid.
There will be more schedules to come, I am sure. I’ve always been a big fan of calendars and planners as design objects. Maybe I’ll start some 2025/2026 stuff now and it will be ready in like 10 months. Until then, I’m crossing my fingers and praying to William Penn for Philly Sports to prevail. Go Birds!
